Apartment Renovation: Bathroom Demolition Complete after 4 Days...

The first room to receive the most attention in my apartment renovation was the teeny tiny bathroom. The trouble spot consumes only 50 of the apartment's grandiose 505 square feet.

The room was plagued with awful baby blue tile that (lucky me) was discovered to be rotted throughout. My contractor unearthed THREE layers of tile and wall. The demo for the room took an entire 8 hours of solid back breaking work. The removal of the nearly 500 pound cast iron tub was an insane task. Items demolished: EVERYTHING.

Only a masochist would renovate a four story walk up in the middle of July in New York City...

The 80 year old building is not equipped with an elevator and this made demolition increasingly more difficult. I highly recommend hiring an outside subcontractor (or sub subcontractor) to remove and properly dispose of the construction waste. Extra cost for removal from my bedroom and into a proper disposal container: $300. This was money well spent as the bags of trash at the end of the day were taller than me.

The crumbling sub floor will have a new concrete slab tomorrow morning and will no longer resemble the nativity scene where baby Jesus was born.

Apartment Renovation: Day One

Day One. After much thought and consideration, the tiles have been selected for the bathroom (field, base trim, top trim and bullnose) and kitchen (floor) tiles from Nemo Tile. The prices are some of the best around - LANKA white 3 x 6 subway tile will run about $2.70 per square foot. Penny tiles (see image) run from $4.25 to $6.85 per square foot (mesh mounted). Please note, all prices are trade. Most ceramic tile from Nemo is in stock, so you can order it and have the tile delivered in three days in many cases. Tomorrow will be the first day of demolition. Bathroom and kitchen will be gutted completely. More on that soon...

The Dead Milkmen
Beelzebubba
Oldies.com (www.oldies.com)
$6.50
Vinyl LP

I purchased The Dead Milkmen's Beelzebubba album (brand new shrink wrapped) about a year ago and listened to it with Matt Hanrahan while drinking a dozen or so canned beers in my apartment on a hot ass summer night. Our fun was magnified when we reminisced about listening to the original cassette tape a thousand times. You'll sing (or attempt) to every song on the record; this is a great listen and good times for a mere $6.50.

The only shitty thing about this album is that it's sold on a site called oldies.com. Fuck we're old.
